Sophia Blackdeer-Young is in the final year of her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at San Francisco State University where she balances academic excellence with profound community impact and commitment to family. She completed a bachelor’s in psychology with a minor in American Indian Studies. In her graduate clinical training, Sophia completed a full year internship at Planned Parenthood of Northern California and is currently interning at Martinez Unified School District. She co-founded the Department of Counseling’s first Indigenous Counseling Collective and actively advocates for the MMIW movement. Every milestone she achieves and all of her hard work are done in loving memory of her grandfather (Cooka), the late Floyd L. Blackdeer and her father Roberto Young. Yet, of all the inspiring hats she wears, her proudest role is being a mother to her two-year old daughter.
